The Householder Lifestyle

Householder:  Wise steward, cares for his land and his people, hospitable to guests, organized management of all he possesses, knowledgeable, respected (interpretation from multiple biblical commentaries)

Lifestyle:  the typical way of life of an individual, group, or culture (Merriam-Webster);  the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc., that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group (dictionary.reference.com)

When beginning to formulate the ideas for our business, we did a family bible study on two areas of scripture that had always been of interest to us, one set of verses from the Old Testament book of Proverbs, and the other from the New Testament book of Matthew.

Proverbs 31:10-31 is the recounting of a prophecy that includes the description of the work of a virtuous woman.  Many of her characteristics are those we have identified as needing to be present in not only a successful family life, but also in a successful career, and in a meaningful worship filled life.  The Proverbs 31 woman is trustworthy, hard working, knowledgeable, strong, wise, determined and courageous, plans for the current needs of her family and gives forethought to future needs.  Her description’s concluding verse (31:27a) begins with “She looketh well to the ways of her household”.

Our New Testament study was on the parables told by Jesus found in Matthew 13.  As we studied this chapter, with not only the intent of applying it to our relationship with God, but also taking the tenets from it and applying them to a business rooted in scriptural foundations, we again found key themes of planning, listening and seeing with the intent of true understanding, and then applying this understanding over again and again.  The final, almost overlooked, parable in Matthew 13:52 referred to a householder, “Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasurer both things old and new.”

The reference to a household in both of these studies made us want to learn more as to the meaning behind a household and a householder.

As we researched the last parable in Matthew 13, all of the commentaries and descriptions of a householder revolved around the fact that a householder was a good steward.  He took care of those on his land.  He was hospitable to guests and saw to their needs.  He was organized in his management of possessions.  Nothing went to waste.  He was professional in his knowledge.  He understood his history and used that knowledge to learn from and apply it to his current and future plans.  The woman described in Proverbs 31 is very similar to this description of a householder.

We find that these lessons, both Old and New Testament, are giving us foundational principles which we are to use to create a life that will glorify God and to use these principles to teach others about the Kingdom of Heaven.  We feel very strongly that we should be applying these principles to all aspects of our life, including our business and business dealings.

Therefore, using our “old” knowledge from our combined work experiences in the hospitality, small business, and corporate industries and using our “new” knowledge from our Bible study, we felt called to base our business on the foundational principles of Hospitality, Organization, and Professionalism.  Our image of the interpretation of a householder embodied all of these principles and more.  If we are able to form a “lifestyle” based on these principles found in a “householder”, we felt it will impact not only our work life, but our home life, and our worship life.
